Watford General Hospital

Watford General Hospital

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute trust providing hospital services to around half a million people living in Hertfordshire, north London and further afield. We run services across three hospitals at Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead.

We strive to provide consistently good, safe care in a friendly, listening and informative way, as and when people need and want it and always with dignity and respect.

We are one of the largest employers locally, with around 4,300 staff and 350 volunteers.

Live in the “Hert” of the country!
Our hospitals are brilliantly located – away from London’s big city living costs, but close enough to enjoy its benefits. And with west Herts’ excellent road and rail connections to many of the UK’s other big cities, you’ll feel right in the “Hert” of the country and well placed to visit family and old friends.

Hertfordshire offers a wide range of different options for living. You can choose, as many of our staff do, to live on London’s nearby northern fringes. Others prefer to live in one of the larger towns in the area, which offer the convenience of urban living, at a lower price than London.

Or, take advantage of the peace and quiet of the lovely rural villages of this famously leafy county, such as Kings Langley, Tring and Wheathampstead.

Whether you’re looking to buy or rent, there’s a town or country property out there that suits you – and those who come with you!

This part of the country enjoys extremely good transport links, so getting to work shouldn’t be a worry.

Rail
There are five main lines into London from Watford alone and you’re just 18 minutes from Euston Station in the centre of town. The county is well positioned on mainline tracks to the midlands, north west and Scotland. Watford even has a London underground station, with another to come.

Road
the M1 and M25 motorways pass close by our hospitals, as do the A1 and A41. There are discounted car parking facilities for staff at all three sites and a salary sacrifice scheme, so you can buy a car more affordably.

Local transport (which also includes Luton airport – and we’re in easy reach of the other London airports) is getting better still. For example, a new link from the M1 to Watford Hospital is currently under construction.

Hertfordshire is well-known for its excellent schools – some of the highest performing schools in the country are in the county and the surrounding area. Our recruitment site has links to help you find a school in the area.

Further Education
West Herts College has a brand new campus, near the centre of Watford. The University of Hertfordshire is situated in the town of Hatfield, which is located in the centre of the county. It was recently deemed the 52nd best university in the world by Times Higher Education.

There is plenty to see and do in west Hertfordshire. We have great tracks for cycling, walking, running as well as water sports. There are award-winning parks, woods and rivers nearby, as well as zoos, wildlife parks, open farms, stately homes and museums. There are great clubs, cafes and shopping facilities as well as markets. And, since their recent promotion, our “next door neighbours”, Watford F.C. is a Premier League football club.

Each of the hospitals’ towns has its own shopping centre, with Watford’s Intu arguably the best-known. Not far across the county is Hatfield’s Galleria, and Brent Cross Shopping Centre, with free parking, is just down the M1.

With its rural feeling, Hertfordshire’s towns also offer markets, a wide variety of restaurants and small independent shops, as well as the international powerhouses you’d expect to find in any city.

We offer a number of residential properties for staff to use near Watford and St Albans Hospitals. These are available for permanent staff, locums, medical students, Medirest and CP Plus staff.
